How to prepare a PC for repair

A short, specific handoff reduces diagnosis time and helps protect both your data and your accounts before computer service.

Describe the sequence

Write what you were doing, what appeared on screen, when it started, whether it happens every time, and what has already been tried. Photograph error messages when possible.

Back up when the drive is healthy

If the PC is stable and the storage shows no failure signs, make a current backup of important files. If the drive clicks, disappears, or has a critical warning, stop and ask before copying large amounts of data.

Use a safe password handoff

Do not tape a permanent email, banking, or Microsoft password to the computer. If access is required, agree on a temporary Windows credential and remove it after service.

Bring the necessary hardware

Bring the laptop power adapter and any unusual dock, adapter, or cable involved in the problem. External monitors and ordinary network cables usually are not needed unless they are part of the fault.
